Set and light designer Wolfgang von Zoubek was born in St. Pölten in Austria and completed his training in Munich and the United States. He has been involved with the Salzburg, Bayreuth and Bregenz Festivals and has been responsible for staging numerous productions since 1986. He has worked with directors such as Sigwulf Turek, Teppe Harms, Pier Luigi Pizzi, Herbert von Karajan, Herbert Wernicke, Luigi Alva, Flavio Trevisan, Georg Rootering, Patrizia Panton, Luis Pascal and Giancarlo del Monaco. As a designer he has worked at the Arena di Verona, the Rossini Festivals in Pesaro, the Mozart Festivals in La Corunia and the Opera Festival in Istanbul, among others. He has also worked in Monte Carlo, Nice, Tokyo, Nagoya, Sydney, Pretoria, Seville, Paris, Rome, Naples, Palermo, Bologna, Genoa, Pisa and Turin, and in Madrid, Bilbao, Stockholm, Bogota, Buenos Aires, Luxembourg, Dallas, Berlin, Vienna, Sofia, Seoul, Skopye, Cartania, Helsinki and Moscow.
Highlights range from the great classical opera repertoire of Verdi’s “Othello”, “Aida”, “Falstaff” and “Simon Boccanegra” through Puccini’s “Il Trittico”, “Tosca”, “La Boheme”, “La Traviata” and “La Fanciulla del West” to the German repertoire including Wagner’s “Tristan and Isolde”, “Parsifal”, “Tannhäuser”, “The Flying Dutchman” and “Ring des Nibelungen“, as well as “Wozzeck”, “Mephistopheles”, “Guntram”, “Salome”, “Don Giovanni”, “Eugene Onegin” and “Moses and Aaron”.
